The Fast & Furious Timeline, Explained
The Fast & Furious franchise has evolved from street racing dramas to globe-trotting action spectacles. With 11 films and counting, the timeline can be confusing. Here's a clear breakdown of when each film takes place.
The Timeline
The Early Years
The Fast and the Furious (2001) — Set in present day (2001). Brian O'Conner goes undercover to investigate Dom Toretto's crew. The racing is grounded, the stakes are personal, and it started a cultural phenomenon.
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) — Set in 2003. Brian moves to Miami and partners with Roman Pearce. This film is the most standalone entry in the franchise.
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) — Set in 2006, but crucially, it's placed later in the timeline due to a cameo at the end. Lucas Black plays a student who discovers drifting in Tokyo.
The Heist Era
Fast & Furious (2009) — Set in 2009. The original cast reunites for a drug lord takedown. This is where the franchise starts shifting from racing to heists.
Fast Five (2011) — Set in 2011. The game-changer. Dom and his crew rob a crime lord in Rio. Dwayne Johnson joins as Hobbs. This is where the franchise found its identity.
Fast & Furious 6 (2013) — Set in 2013. The crew faces off against Owen Shaw's mercenary team. The runway scene is one of the most gloriously absurd action sequences ever filmed.
The Action Era
Furious 7 (2015) — Set in 2015. Paul Walker's final film. The franchise pays tribute to Brian while delivering incredible action. The skydrop scene and the car- parachuting are legendary.
The Fate of the Furious (2017) — Set in 2017. Dom turns against his family (for reasons). Charlize Theron's Cipher introduces cyber-terrorism to the franchise. The submarine chase is peak absurdity.
F9 (2021) — Set in 2019. Dom's brother Jakob (John Cena) appears. The franchise goes to space. Yes, really. In a car. It's as ridiculous and entertaining as it sounds.
Fast X (2023) — Set in 2021. Jason Momoa's Dante is the best villain in franchise history. The film sets up the final chapter with a devastating cliffhanger.
The Finale
Fast X: Part 2 (2026) — The conclusion. Dom's story comes to an end. Expect maximum absurdity, emotional goodbyes, and probably another car going to space.
The Hobbs & Shaw Timeline
Hobbs & Shaw (2019) — A spinoff featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Set in 2019 between F8 and F9.
How to Watch
For first-timers: watch in release order. The franchise's charm is watching how it evolves from grounded racing drama to impossible action spectacle. Embrace the absurdity and you'll have a blast.
